Rubrik – Upgrade Process Quick Notes

Quick notes on how to upgrade Rubrik CDM and Rubrik Edge Devices

Upgrade Rubrik CDM

  • Download the ZIP file containing the compressed upgrade archive and the matching signature file from the Rubrik customer portal
  • Unzip the downloaded ZIP file
  • Open WINSCP session to a Rubrik node
    • Log in with user “adminstaging” (same password as the admin GUI password)
    • Transfer (SFTP) the upgrade file and the signature file to the node.
  • Close WINSCP session
  • Pause protection
    • Log in to the Rubrik CDM web UI.
    • Click the gear icon on the top bar of the web UI.
    • The gear menu appears.
    • Click Pause Protection.
    • A confirmation dialog box appears.
    • Click Continue
  • Open putty session as admin user and execute the below commands
    • cluster upgrade status
    • cluster upgrade start –mode prechecks_only
    • cluster upgrade status watch
    • cluster upgrade start
    • cluster upgrade status watch
  • Resume protection
    • Log in to the Rubrik CDM web UI.
    • Click the gear icon on the top bar of the web UI.
    • The gear menu appears.
    • Click Resume Protection.
    • A confirmation dialog box appears.
    • Click Resume.

Upgrade Rubrik Edge Device

  • Check if data disk is minimum 128 GB, if not resize HDD to 128 GB
    • shut down machine in hypervisor
    • resize disk to 128 GB
    • startup
  • Download the ZIP file containing the compressed upgrade archive and the matching signature file from the Rubrik customer portal
  • Unzip the downloaded ZIP file
  • Open WINSCP session to the Rubrik device
    • Log in with user “adminstaging” (same password as te admin GUI password)
    • Transfer (SFTP) the upgrade file and the signature file to the node.
  • Close WINSCP session
  • Open putty session as admin user and execute the below commands
    • cluster upgrade status
    • cluster upgrade start –mode prechecks_only
    • cluster upgrade start
    • cluster upgrade status watch

  1. Hope you dont mind but I believe that autocorrect has caused an issue for you here:
    cluster upgrade start –mode prechecks_only
    should be:
    cluster upgrade start – -mode prechecks_only

    Thought I’d point it out.

      This is actually what I wrote (two minus signs in front of “mode”). Maybe the font was not that clear. I changed now the font so it’s better readable.
